Acupuncture

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our bodies are home to a network of meridians and collateral channels where Qi (energy), Blood and Body Fluids circulate. Keeping these vital substances strong and moving properly throughout the channels ensures we have a healthy body. When Qi cannot flow freely, Acupuncturists believe that illness and pain can occur.

Acupuncture helps regulate our bodies functions by inserting ultra fin needles into specific acupuncture points along the meridians. TCM Acupuncturists aim to stimulate the flow of energy, restore balance and harmony and activate the body’s own powerful ability to heal naturally.

The stress and trauma we experience in life can easily upset the body’s natural equilibrium, manifesting itself in both physical and mental chronic conditions. Using ancient diagnostic methods, Acupuncture can pin point those imbalances and current them, allowing us to be free from illness and pain

What to expect from your treatment

Rebeka will carry out a diagnosis by asking questions, looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse.

Using this information she will establish what imbalances are occurring and choose an appropriate Acupuncture treatment for you. This may also include moxibustion, cupping, and/or electro acupuncture.

Ultra fine needles are then inserted into the the acupuncture points specific to your treatment. These will remain there for 20 - 30 minutes. In order to get the best out of the treatment, Rebeka recommends allowing yourself to drift into a relaxing sleep.

In the case of musculoskeletal related pain, Rebeka may ask you to move around after she has inserted the first set of needles before getting you on the couch and adding more.

Once the treatment is complete the needles are then carefully removed and disposed of.

Treatment length - 45 - 60 minutes

What can Acupuncture help you with?

It is a common belief that Acupuncture is only used to reduce pain in the body, like the lower back, shoulder or knees, which maybe the case when receiving Western Acupuncture such as Dry Needling.

However, TCM Acupuncture is used to not just for pain but to correct chronic imbalances that present themselves as illness in the body . Here are just some of the conditions I have been able to help my clients with:
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Digestive disorders - IBS
  • Gynaecological issues - heavy or regular periods
  • Asthma
  • Skin conditions
  • Infertility
  • Depression
  • Chronic muscular pain - lower back, frozen shoulder, whiplash, knee cartilage damage.
  • Acute injury

FAQ's

Does Acupuncture hurt?
Most clients report feeling nothing when the needle is inserted. Others feel a tiny prick but not enough to make you go 'Ow'. When the needle is stimulated to find the energy you may experience a slight tingle or pulling sensation. Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles that are used for injections They are ultra fine and almost as thin as your hair. I have come across many needlephobes who have quickly overcome their fear after receiving the first treatment. Generally anyone who is sensitive to needles, I will start with a small amount and gradually build up.

How quick are the results?
These days everyone wants everything fixing in an instant. What we have to remember is Rome wasn't built in a day and your chronic conditions didn't just happen over night. Some clients experience a reduction in symptoms after one treatment, and other it may take a few. Everyone is completely individual and therefore responds and heals differently. Acupuncture isn't about a quick fix or masking the symptoms, it is about getting to the root cause of your problem and encouraging your body to heal naturally from the inside out.

What is Cupping?
Glass cups are applied on the skin and either fixed in one place and glided across your bodies surface. The purpose is to draw out toxins, (harmful energies) remove blood stagnation, and increase the circulation of blood and Qi in the area. This is great for tight muscles as well as helping with colds and allergies.

What is Moxibustion?
Moxa is a Chinese herb which is put onto needles and left to burn, or a moxa stick is held over specific acupuncture points or the needle itself. Its purpose is to warm the area and corresponding energy pathway enhancing the treatment. Alternatively a heat lamp may be used.

What is Electroacupuncture
After the needles have been inserted, wires are then attached and a small electrical current is sent directly int the needle. This current is used to stimulate the acupuncture point continuously throughout the treatment. This does not hurt and once clients are confident with the process I allow them to control the intensity of electroacupuncture device themselves. This means you can be fully in control.
